Energy supply

Background

The supply of electricity in the UK has three main components:

  1. Generation by power stations

  2. Electricity transmission via a grid

  3. Distribution via regional networks

Since privatisation in 1991 the Transmission Network Owners (TNOs) are The National Grid in England and Scottish Power in Scotland. The distribution operators include: EDF Energy, CE Electrics, Central Networks and United Utilities.

The energy regulator is OFGEM.
