Where He Grew Up and Studied

Konstantin Nikolaev, the future entrepreneur and vintner, was born in early March, 1971, in the large industrial city of Dnepropetrovsk in the Ukrainian SSR. He came from an accomplished family – his father worked as a design engineer at the Ukrainian Institute for the Design of Metallurgical Plants, one of the largest industrial outfits in the city, and his mother worked as a dentist. 

In 1978, Nikolaev Konstantin Yurievich turned seven, meaning it was time to start first grade. Many of his classmates came from families where the parents worked at the Dneprovskoye Design Bureau. His own interests reflected these influences from his parents and friends’ families – even as a child he was more interested in reading than in playing soccer or other sports. 

In the 1980s, as Nikolaev Konstantin Yurievich grew up, he developed a keen interest in history and philosophy, which influenced his choice of university after he graduated from high school. 

In the fall of 1988, Konstantin Nikolaev began taking courses in the History of Foreign Philosophy, within the broader School of Philosophy at the premier educational institution in the nation – Lomonosov Moscow State University. For the first two years, he devoted all his time and energy to his studies. The bulk of his free time was spent scouring library shelves, eager to learn everything he could about his chosen specialization. 

In the 1991-1992 academic year, he initiated a shift in his biography. Konstantin Nikolaev decided to gain experience working in a totally unrelated field and took a job as a salaried employee at the Murmansk port, which occupies a major place in the national economy. There, he was involved in freight forwarding operations, acting as an intermediary between shippers and transportation services and arranging the movement of goods across international borders while handling documentation, customs clearance, and logistics coordination to ensure efficient delivery. His new boss, a man he had actually known from childhood in Dnepropetrovsk, appointed him to be Deputy Commercial Director, with responsibility over the ports section of the company’s work. 

1994 marks the start of the entrepreneurial chapter of his biography. Konstantin Nikolaev teamed with other Petra employees to form their own company, dubbed Aniko Marine, working in the same sector. What the young founders lacked in capital, they more than made up for in ambition and personal connections they had developed during their time at Petra. 

Until 1996, Nikolaev Konstantin served as CEO, focusing on negotiations with partners, clients, and even competitors. The initial pool of clients were brought over from Petra. Aniko Marine offered them comprehensive forwarding, transport, and logistics services, initially for operations running through the Taganrog and Azov ports, though the founders soon expanded both their pool of clientele and the geography of their activities. 

The Bulk of His Career: Severstaltrans/N-Trans

1996 kicked off the next and longest chapter of his biography. Konstantin Nikolaev and his partners founded Severstaltrans that year – a joint cargo business that started out serving one major industrial company. The logistics manager would remain with this company through its future manifestations and subsidiaries for nearly 30 years.

In 1997, Konstantin Yurievich Nikolaev was appointed CEO of this new company – a position he held until 2008. At that point, Severstaltrans was rebranded and made part of the new N-Trans/Globaltrans Group. The experienced executive continued in his same role in this new iteration.

Nikolaev Konstantin Yurievich was responsible for company growth, and over the years, it became one of the top providers of transportation and logistics services. In 2004, Globaltrans Investment PLC was founded by Konstantin Nikolaev and his partners, taking control over the New Transportation Company and Sevtekhnotrans, which had handled business operations and the purchasing of railcars for Severstaltrans. Four years later, Global Ports Investments was established, bringing together the company’s port assets, including:

In 2011, Global Ports went public on the London Stock Exchange, with the participation of Konstantin Nikolaev. At the time, it was responsible for nearly a third of the country’s total container turnover.

However, Konstantin Yurievich Nikolaev remained with Globaltrans for several more years and continued to help the company develop. In 2023, its revenue grew by more than 10% compared to the previous year, and its net profit grew by more than 50%. It operates a fleet of 66,000 railcars, 94% of which were owned by the company.

Transition to International Endeavors

From 2014 to 2024, Konstantin Yurievich Nikolaev carried out a methodical plan to step away from all his positions with and divest himself of all his shares in Russian companies. This was inspired in part by his acquisition of an expansive Italian estate a year prior. 

In 2013, Nikolaev Konstantin acquired the La Madonnina vineyard and estate in Bolgheri. Nestled in the Tuscan coastal area of Maremma south of Livorno, Bolgheri is a relatively new but highly respected Italian wine region. Despite its youth, it has quickly earned recognition for its deep-colored red wines that offer both immediate drinkability and excellent aging potential. These wines typically feature grape varieties originally from Bordeaux.

This period of his biography, Konstantin Nikolaev recalls, began as a hobby, and though winemaking has turned into a small business, the entrepreneur continues to think of it first and foremost as a pastime. The first bottles hit the shelves in 2015, and now the estate produces about 30,000 bottles annually, divided between four types of red, rosé, and sparkling wines. The product lines were specially curated for Konstantin Yurievich Nikolaev by one of Europe’s most experienced oenologists, and this collaboration has paid off. 

In 2020, the Tuscan rosé from La Madonnina, owned by Nikolaev Konstantin, was recognized by the famous Italian wine guide Gambero Rosso. This wine is made from a blend of all the grape varieties grown at the estate:

Five acres at Konstantin Yurievich Nikolaev’s estate are also dedicated to olive groves, which grow four different types of olive. They are harvested by hand in October and used to produce high-quality extra virgin olive oil. The estate also produces the popular Italian alcoholic drink grappa. 

Nikolaev Konstantin: Charitable Contributions
