Macro Triggers for Crypto Rallies: How Fed Policy, ETF Flows and Institutional Demand Ignite Bull Market
The cryptocurrency market is not isolated from other economic sectors, and that can be seen in how fluctuations in interest rates, financial framework and access to assets can have an effect on bitcoin demand.
The concept of opportunity cost helps illustrate this. Investors consider various options and cannot invest in bitcoin while investing in a government bond, a savings account or any other alternative investment. If these alternatives are perceived to yield better returns while being less risky, investors may have no reason to invest in the risky assets. But if the investment yields in safer assets decline, the conflict is less present.
This helps explain why monetary policy and changes in the financial system have often accompanied a crypto bull run.
When Interest Rates Change, So Does the Investment Calculation
Interest rates impact the earnings complexion within the financial markets. Therefore, the lower the interest rates set by the Federal Reserve, the cheaper is borrowing and, thus, also the yields from earnings gained on the interest-bearing assets. Although lower rates do not make Bitcoin attractive, it does change the way investors compare it with other investment options. A good example is provided by 2020 when, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its negative effect on the financial markets, the Federal Reserve set its target federal funds rates at 0-0.25%. It also ordered the Federal Reserve Bank of New York to at least double the amount of its Treasury securities to $500 billion, and the amount of agency-based mortgage securities was increased to the minimum of $200 billion.
This was not done to raise the prices of Bitcoin, but to ensure financial stability and supply the loans.
Bitcoin experienced a significant increase during the years of 2020 and 2021. The important lesson learned from this is that the cut in Fed interest rates does not mean that the price of Bitcoin will rise. Instead, monetary conditions may impact the decisions of the investors regarding the acquisition of a risky asset.
Once the Fed started raising interest rates in the year of 2022, the calculation changed completely. By July 2023, the federal funds target range increased to 5.25-5.50%. As the returns from the safe assets rose and the financial conditions tightened, the motivation to take additional risk changed accordingly. Bitcoin suffered a big decline in value during the same period.
Different aspects were considered in addition to the developments within the crypto industry. Nevertheless, it is easy to conclude how important monetary policy is in the analysis of the prices of cryptocurrencies.
ETFs Made Bitcoin Easier to Access
Interest rates can only describe a portion of the story, but the reason for the increased institutional involvement in Bitcoin is not explained. The emergence of regulated ETPs has marked another crucial change in the landscape.
On 10th January 2024, the US Securities and Exchange Commission approved the registration and trading of Bitcoin ETPs. There were eleven approved applications, among them products of such financial conglomerates as BlackRock, Fidelity, and Grayscale.
The importance of this event is greater than just being another approval. The institution making a direct investment in Bitcoin may face lots of issues regarding custody, compliance, and investment mandates. An ETP serves as a different way to get exposure to the underlying asset through the already existing framework of traditional finance.
If an asset becomes easier to buy and keep for some group of investors, then this group will have more potential buyers of this asset. Bitcoin as such has not changed in any way, but the ease of getting access to it has.
In other words, there seems to be an increasing integration of cryptocurrencies and traditional finance. Portfolio managers and other investors are now able to consider Bitcoin in relation to their assets in decision-making portfolios.
Institutional Demand Beyond ETFs
The influence of institutions in BTC does not end here. Companies started purchasing Bitcoin for their own balance sheet purposes.
For instance, Strategy (previously MicroStrategy) purchased an additional 4,020 BTC in May 2025, bringing its holdings to 580,250 BTC in general.
Making corporate purchases of Bitcoin differs from purchasing it on impulse like ordinary investors do. Corporations make the decisions on buying Bitcoin based on the expected future value of this asset, as well as on the financial capabilities available and the strategy for balance sheet management.
Institutional investing creates an important area of demand, but it does not influence the market in one direction only, it can be either positive or negative.
How These Forces Work Together
Monetary policies, various financial products, and institutional demand are profoundly interconnected. Reduced interest rates mean that the opportunity costs of holding risk-prone assets are diminished. Thanks to ETFs, cryptocurrency has become more accessible to traditional investors. Another source of demand is created by businesses.
Bitcoin’s price is increasingly dependent on what happens in traditional economies. Bitcoin price still depends on speculation, regulation, technical changes, and investor mood, but it is already influenced by the operations of financial institutions.
The case of Bitcoin is undeniable evidence of how economic incentives affect the formation of the young financial market. Changes in returns on safer assets, alterations in access to cryptocurrency, and changes in huge investors’ portfolios lead to changes in cryptocurrency demand.
