Product differentiation turns commodity aluminium into a premium, corrosion-resistant metal

Although aluminium is a commodity on the world market, its electrochemical finish results in reduced exposure to commodity pricing. According to one industry estimate, the aluminium anodising industry was valued at approximately USD 3.04bn in 2025 and is forecast to grow to USD 5.50bn by 2035. This difference in price results from the distinctive attributes that an anodised aluminium finish imparts to what would otherwise be identical products.

Anodised aluminium is a much higher-value metal than non-anodised aluminium because it provides added benefits.

The raw ingot of aluminium (that is, the raw metal) is a commodity. This means there is no meaningful difference between one supplier's tonne of this material and another's, so the value of the aluminium is determined by the price. With anodised aluminium, the anodising process creates a layered film that is much thicker than the naturally occurring layer of protection created by the metal's own oxide. In addition to being several thousand times thicker than the natural oxide layer, this film adds to its corrosion resistance, more effectively than many paints or coatings.

The anodised finish is an intrinsic part of the metal, as anodising creates an oxide layer grown from the metal itself; as such, it cannot flake or peel off. Anodising aluminium enables manufacturers to offer anodised finishes on natural aluminium products and sell each finish as a substantially different product — the process of product differentiation. The variety of anodised products ranges from natural to coloured to hard anodised. This means that a single base metal can be used for multiple applications: architectural, decorative, heavy-duty or industrial. This variety creates multiple selling opportunities for the product, depending on the needs of the consumer.

Quality, not price, is the differentiator for aluminium

The general pattern for products differentiated in this way is: when a product can be described as well differentiated, sellers compete with each other through non-price competition for customers based upon product features such as finish, colour variety, warranty, and specification. This type of market is an example of the economics of monopolistic competition as there are multiple suppliers of a product that have a slightly different version of the same underlying product. Differentiation of the product will also reduce the price elasticity of demand for a seller; in the case of an architect specifying an anodised façade with a life expectancy of several decades, an untreated coil is not a true substitute, and therefore will make the buyer less likely to switch suppliers based on pricing alone. In this way, the anodiser has greater pricing power than a commodity producer and sets a margin above cost that reflects the quality of the finish rather than the spot price of the underlying metal.

Loyalty and pricing power are built by finishes lasting decades

Anodised surfaces maintain their aesthetic appearance for 40 to 60 years when used on a building façade. Therefore, specifiers (architects) return to trusted anodisers — forming the basis of brand loyalty for anodisers. Because of the way competition works, consistently high-quality products represent ongoing competitive advantages to established anodisers, allowing them to defend margins instead of chasing volume. It is important to note that the equipment necessary to achieve a high-quality finish (anodising tanks, rectifiers, and effluent treatments) is capital-intensive, which creates barriers to entry for those attempting to enter this market, and also rewards established anodisers (those with large lines in operation) because they have the economies of scale giving lower fixed costs per unit.

The greater the demand for aluminium, the greater the total payoff for differentially marketed products

In the global demand for aluminium for 2024, demand was approximately 101.3 million tonnes; just under half of demand came from the combination of transportation (automobile industries) and construction (the facade). In addition, as a result of the interest in lightweight automobile manufacturing and the growth in architects specifying the use of anodised facades, there is an increasing demand for the availability of upgraded aluminium products (aluminium that has been anodised). Each upgraded (anodised) tonne of aluminium has a higher price than the tonne of product used to produce it. There are two clear examples demonstrating how the differentiation in the market can significantly influence the prices paid for aluminium products. In the case of architectural use, anodised curtain walls are typically specified because of their ability to resist the effects of weather better than paint can, thereby justifying a higher price per square metre than the price of untreated aluminium. In the case of consumer electronics, the application of anodised finishes on laptops and mobile phones allows manufacturers to charge a premium price for a superior appearance and feel (compared to plastic). This takes what is generally considered a final finishing process and transforms it into a valuable marketing point. The same pricing mechanism presents itself for hard-anodised components for aerospace and rail markets where the finishes reduce wear across the airframe's life, so these differentiated pieces are assessed based on their usefulness and total life value instead of just their initial cost.
