Containerisation: How Shipping Containers Changed Global Trade
What Is Containerisation?
Containerisation is the practice of moving goods in standard-sized sealed metal boxes. The same container can be lifted from ship to train to lorry without ever being opened or repacked. The idea dates to 1956, when Malcolm McLean loaded 58 containers onto the Ideal-X in under eight hours, a fraction of the week or more a break-bulk crew would have needed, before it sailed from Newark to Houston. By 1968, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) had fixed standard container sizes, letting the system scale globally.
Containerisation and Economies of Scale
Standard boxes didn't just speed up loading; they made a new class of ship possible. Once cargo came in a uniform shape, "cellular" vessels could be built to stack containers directly rather than being packed by hand around irregular loads. That design let shipbuilders keep scaling up: today's largest container ships carry over 20,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units, the industry's standard box-count measure), several hundred times the Ideal-X's 58. Larger ships spread fixed costs (fuel, crew, port fees) across more boxes, pushing the cost per container-mile steadily downward. This economy of scale, layered on top of faster handling, is what turned containerisation from a loading-dock efficiency into a structural force in global trade.
How Containerisation Cut Trade Costs
Before containerisation, cargo was loaded break-bulk: packed into barrels, crates and bundles, handled piece by piece, leaving ships in port for days. According to economic historian Marc Levinson (The Box), break-bulk loading cost around $5.86 a tonne in the mid-1950s; containerised loading cost about $0.16 a tonne, a fall of roughly 97%. That's a loading-cost figure, not total shipping cost, but it explains why turnaround times fell from days to hours. The result was a form of trade liberalisation achieved without any change to tariffs or policy, and a physical driver of the economic integration that reshaped global production over recent decades.
Why Shipping Disruption Now Hits Harder
This efficiency has concentrated a large share of world trade through a handful of routes, or "chokepoints": the Suez Canal alone carries 12–15% of global maritime trade. There's no cost-effective alternative when one closes. The risk is compounded by just-in-time inventory management: businesses now hold minimal stock and rely on fast, reliable resupply, so when transit times lengthen there's no buffer to absorb the delay.
